Porcelain Tooth Fillings in Sarasota, FL

Porcelain Tooth Fillings in Sarasota, FL at Sarasota Dentistry

Advantages of Porcelain Fillings (Inlays & Onlays)

Porcelain dental fillings can be referred to as inlays or onlays depending on which part of the tooth is being restored. Inlays are generally performed when there is no damage to the cusps of the tooth and the porcelain can be placed into the center, or inner aspects of the tooth structure. Onlays are performed when there is more significant damage to the tooth, requiring porcelain to cover and/or replace a larger portion of tooth structure including the cusp or pointy aspect of the tooth.

Sarasota porcelain fillings are much stronger and a more reliable type of filling than a tooth colored bonding or resin filling procedure. The more durable porcelain, also known as ceramic, resists wear and tear, staining and maintains a silky smooth surface for many years. Traditionally, porcelain fillings were fabricated in a dental lab and required two dental visits, Fortunately, Sarasota Dentistry offers porcelain dental fillings in one visit utilizing state-of-the-art CAD/CAM technology by CEREC. The porcelain is exactly the same as a dental lab. These fillings are designed to cover a portion of your tooth rather than covering the entire tooth, such as a crown would. Porcelain inlays or onlays are bonded into/onto the tooth. The advantage of the porcelain filling is that it is fully contoured outside of the mouth prior to bonding into/onto the tooth, whereas,  a bonded filling or resin is free-formed directly in the mouth so it has it’s limitations. Those limitations include: saliva, tongue, vision, access. While all of these factors still exist when bonding porcelain fillings, they are greatly reduced since the time in the mouth is greatly reduced. The filling has already been fully contoured outside of the mouth. It is a good idea to consider these advantages when choosing what type of dental filling you would like to replace the missing, broken or decayed tooth structure.
